Loreto to Santa RosaliaThe core area surrounding Costa Loreto and the city of Loreto

This is the core area surrounding Costa Loreto and the city of Loreto, serviced by its international airport.  It includes a coastal plain that begins 25 miles south of Loreto at Ligui and Ensenada Blanca, northward to ten miles or so north of Loreto, and into the cordillera of the Sierra de la Giganta mountains where Mision San Javier and other relics of the missionary past are to be found.   North of Loreto the road stays inland through alternating flat and hilly terrain to the south end of Bahia Concepcion, and on the coast to the east of this stretch – reached by boat – are some very small villages and the small and still remote poblado of San Bruno, which does enjoy a direct dirt-road link to Highway One and where some upscale homes already exist.

The highway runs along the western shore of scenic Bahia Concepcion, about 15 miles in length,  where there are a series of coves, small islands  and protected beach areas that have hosted camping for visitors for decades, and still do.  In a few there are some facilities and permanent houses; in others it’s just the clear water, sand, mangroves, and sun.   To the north, at the mouth of the bay and about 5 miles south of Mulege, is Punta Suenos, an exceptionally well planned and executed rustic subdivision where our exclusive agents Mision Loreto Properties are offering lots for sale.

Mulege itself is distinguished by its miles-long palm lined estuary, its nearby cave paintings, and a laid-back life style.  North of Mulege about 15 minutes by car is Santa Rosalia, which was a booming mining and ore processing town until the industry was brought low by the Mexican Revolution of 1910.   New investment  by a Canadian-led group is now, in late 2011, reviving the mine industry, and the project, called El Boleo, promises to provide around 5000 new jobs in mining of gold and silver and other minerals, and processing and shipping them, to the region.   Santa Rosalia is also the western terminus of the ferry run that links the central peninsula  to the mainland of Mexico at Topolobampo, near Guaymas on the eastern shore of the Sea of Cortez.
